Topamax is an effective antiepileptic drug that enhances the GABA receptors' activity and normalizes effect of AMPA receptors. The Topamax is used for epilepsy's initial stages treatment, migraine and spasmodic states of different etiology. Topamax has antispasmodic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. Indications for use:
Topamax is appointed for epilepsy treatment, to treat tonic-clonic seizures, migraine, syndrome Lennox-Gastaut, absences, myoclonic and partial seizures. Topamax has positive reviews as an auxiliary drug for eliminating muscle spasms of smooth muscles.
Topamax for epileptic seizures is taken orally two times a day at dose of 200 mg. At the initial epilepsy's stage you need to start with taking 25 mg of Topamax per day and gradually increase the dosage. Increasing the dosage depends on patient's clinical indications. Topamax shouldn't be appointed to children under 2 years; for children from 2 to 10 years dosage shouldn't surpass 50 mg/day. The dosage should be minimum for patients with kidney disease. Topamax is appointed for migraine and is prescribed 100 mg 2 times/day for this case. With strong attacks of migraine dosage is increased to 200 mg (appointment of two times/day). For the prophylaxis the patient must take the drug for 1 week at 25 mg 1 time a day (before bedtime).
